Eczema

Eczema is a term used to encompass skin conditions that cause skin swelling and discoloration. They are often dry and itchy. The rash that occurs is due to scratching a very itchy patch of skin.

The most common type of eczema is atopic dermatitis. Children and babies are most affected by this type of eczema. Contact dermatitis is an allergic reaction caused by something that touches the skin. An example of this is poison ivy. Dyshidrotic dermatitis occurs on hands or feet and can cause an itching, burning, and sometimes blistering rash.

Your dermatologist will consider factors to that may cause your eczema are irritants, allergens, and possible infections.

Treatments your dermatologist may suggest

  • Topical steroids used to reduce inflammation and itching
  • Ultraviolet light therapy
  • Antibiotics - for eczema infections
  • Antihistamines
  • Corticosteroids
