What are Scabies?

Scabies are caused from mites so small you can't see them. They burrow into the skin causing an extremely itchy rash. They are not the same as body lice. Scabies can be spread from skin to skin contact or contact with any infected clothing or furniture. Anybody can get scabies.

What are the symptoms?

If you have never had scabies before, symptoms can take 2 to 6 weeks to show. If you have had them before, itching can start in 1 to 4 days. Itching can be accompanied by a rash of tiny bumps that create a line. Sores can appear from excessive scratching. They are most commonly found on hands, arms, and skin covered by clothing or jewelry.

How are they diagnosed?

Your dermatologist will examine the area and may scrape off a bit of skin. This scraping will be looked at under the microscope. The dermatologist will be looking for mites or eggs.

What is the treatment?

The dermatologist will prescribe a medication to treat scabies. The person diagnosed will need treated, but so will anybody that has close contact with this person.
